Sound Transit set annual ridership records in 2013 for boardings on its trains and buses.

Overall, the agency saw approximately 30.3 million boardings last year, an increase of more than 8 percent over 2012, according to a Feb. 27 Sound Transit news release. Average weekday boardings topped 101,000. Central Link light rail ridership grew 11 percent.

“Light rail ridership has seen double-digit increases in every year of operation,” said Dow Constantine, Sound Transit Board Chairman and King County Executive. “This new record only confirms how essential transit is to our regional mobility and prosperity.”

The ridership increases were:

• ST Express regional buses: 57,132 average weekday boardings and 16.6 million annual boardings (8 percent increase from 2012)

• Central Link light rail: 28,953 average weekday boardings and 9.7 million annual boardings (11 percent increase from 2012)

• Sounder commuter rail: 11,587 average weekday boardings and 3.0 million annual boardings (8 percent increase from 2012)
