Witness follows vehicle to help Kent Police catch hit-and-run suspect

Kent woman, 28, hurt in collision early Dec. 15 at South 196th Street and 80th Avenue South

A witness followed a vehicle and helped Kent Police catch a 56-year-old Des Moines man arrested for investigation of a hit-and-run with injury.

Officers responded at about 4:34 a.m. Friday, Dec. 15 to a report of a crash between two vehicles with an injury at South 196th Street and 80th Avenue South, according to a Dec. 18 Kent Police news release.

Puget Sound Fire firefighters extricated a 28-year-old Kent woman from her car. She suffered cuts on her head and hands.

The other driver fled, but a witness, a 44-year-old Belfair man, followed behind him and watched as the man reportedly attempted to hide his vehicle in between semi trucks parked along 88th Avenue South, according to police. The witness kept in touch with police and led officers to the location where they arrested the man at about 5:08 a.m., just 34 minutes after the collision.

“We want to thank the witness for keeping an eye on the fleeing vehicle, and then staying on scene to lead officers to its location,” according to a police statement. “We also want to note that he did this without contacting the suspect, and kept his distance for safety.”
