The Kent Reporter Athletes of the Week for Oct. 24 are from Kentlake High School; Lincoln Moore (So.) football and Layni Culp (Sr.) soccer.
What do you value in your sport or about your team?
Moore: I value my team’s work ethic and desire to get better.
Culp: Something I value about my team is our connection and resilience. We put so much fight into all that we do to fight through adversity to win.
What have you learned from your sport that you can take with you throughout your life/future?
Moore: Football has taught me discipline and leadership that I will use for the rest of my future.
Culp:Something that I have learned from soccer is that not everything will go your way and there will be ups and downs. But keeping your head up and staying positive will get you far.
What do you do when you aren’t motivated and what helps you stay motivated?
Moore: I get closer to my teammates around me. Everyone is there to keep me motivated and accountable when I am not able to do so myself.
Culp:When I am not motivated I just tell myself to get up and get stuff done and usually that kind of discipline works. To stay motivated I remember my goal and keep pushing.
Do you have a favorite pre-game meal?
Moore: I am not a big eater pregame but if I had to choose, I would definitely like some orange chicken.
Culp:My fave pregame meal is always a peanut better english muffin and fruit plus a fun size candy bar (quick sugars work).
What advice would you give to a teammate that is struggling?
Moore: Use the guys around you to get better. Your teammates are such a useful tool when you’re struggling.
Culp:I would tell my teammate that how they are feeling is valid but to attack the problem head on. Rather than dwelling and being negative it is important to address the struggle and keep moving forward!
From the sidelines:
Moore: Lincoln had an outstanding game with two rushing touchdowns and two interceptions on defense. What truly sets him apart is his leadership and character. Lincoln embodies our core values- he works hard, does his job and is unselfish. That makes him a great player and even better teammate. His contributions on and off the field make him a deserving honoree.
Culp:Layni is a natural born leader who has been on varsity all four years of high school. She comes in clutch during every game. She has taken on a new role this season at center back in order to help her team even though it’s not her preferred position. She puts the needs of the team above herself. She’s versatile and dependable and we’re lucky to have her leadership on our team.
