The Kent Reporter Athletes of the Week for Oct. 31 are from Kent-Meridian High School; Adonai Garza (Sr.) football and Donna Wittschiebe (Jr.) volleyball.
What do you value in your sport or about your team?
Wittschiebe: I value the connections we make as team going through highs and lows together is a sisterhood. That’s what I value about volleyball.
Garza: The brotherhood
What have you learned from your sport that you can take with you throughout your life/future?
Wittschiebe: To make varsity and be successful you have to be bold. Doing volleyball has helped me be okay with being energetic, being loud, and “sticking out” which will help me with future goals.
Garza:Hard work, dedication and consistency.
What do you do when you aren’t motivated and what helps you stay motivated?
Wittschiebe: Volleyball is a roller coaster of emotions and when I look around the court, I can’t be selfish. I don’t want to bring down the team. My teammates depend on me and each other.
Garza: Talk to God and remember the verse Deuteronomy 31:6.
Do you have a favorite pre-game meal?
Wittschiebe: I like to get a raspberry matcha at starbucks and a big fat chipotle burrito – it has to be a fat one.
Garza: White rice and chicken
What advice would you give to a teammate that is struggling?
Wittschiebe: You have to know your teammates and identify what’s bothering them – then overflow them with reassurance. You have to fill up their jar.
Garza: Keep your head up and stay consistent.
From the sidelines:
Wittschiebe: Donna demonstrates discipline, perseverance and is intentional with what she does on the court. She defines team leader, in her actions and has great spirit. Donna was also part of a student group that was instrumental in obtaining a large grant for all KM athletes from Safeway for athlete nutrition.
Garza: Adonai deserves to be honored because he has developed into a tough and dependable Kent-Meridian Royal. He is solid on both sides of the ball and has continued to develop as a leader in his senior year. Adonai has been resilient through the entire season.
