Shootout aside, plenty of good memories from fall sports | Column

I hate shootouts. Can’t stand ’em. In fact, I can’t think of a more ridiculous way to end a game, particularly a state championship game. However, I am able to come up with several alternatives in other sports that would be the equivalent. Baseball? Have a home run derby.

Pickard backstops T-Birds to shootout victory over Spokane

Seattle Thunderbirds goalie Calvin Pickard made 48 saves Nov. 19 at ShoWare Center to lead the T-Birds to a 2-1 shootout victory over the Spokane Chiefs. Pickard arrived in Seattle on Friday afternoon from Prince George, British Columbia, where he was participating in the Subway Super Series Nov. 17 and 18.

Silvertips edge T-Birds 3-2 on ShoWare ice

The Everett Silvertips defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 3-2 Nov. 20 at the ShoWare Center. Everett (10-8-1-3) opened the scoring at 3:42 of the first period on Josh Winquist's third goal of the season. Tyler Maxwell had the only assist. The Silvertips stretched their lead to 2-0 at 12:31 of the first period on Maxwell's 15th goal of the season. Kellan Tochkin and Brennan Yadlowski registered assists on the goal.

T-Bird Hickman named to Hockey Canada’s Team Pacific

Seattle Thunderbirds center Justin Hickman was named to Hockey Canada's Team Pacific Nov. 17. Team Pacific is one of five Canadian teams that will skate at the 2011 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, December 29 to January 4, in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Team Pacific is comprised of 11 players from British Columbia and 11 players from Alberta.

The Class 4A girls soccer championship will have a decidedly local feel Saturday afternoon. South Puget Sound League North Division powers Tahoma (20-1) and Kentwood (17-3-1) both won their respective semifinal games Friday night and will meet for the state title at 4 p.m. on Saturday at Harry E. Lang Stadium in Lakewood.

School records were falling left and right at the Class 4A state swim meet Nov. 12-13 at the King County Aquatic Center. Emily Tanasse from Kentlake broke her own record in the 100-yard butterfly three times over the weekend.

Kentridge basketball star Gary Bell made it official Wednesday morning, signing a letter-of-intent to play next year at Gonzaga University. Bell announced his intentions to sign with the Bulldogs in April. He averaged 22.6 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game last year.

CROSS COUNTRY: Kent-Meridian duo leads local runners at state meet

Personal records proved to be the name of the game Saturday afternoon during the Class 4A state cross country meet at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco. The Tahoma High girls, behind an entire roster of personal bests, brought home the area’s top overall finish, tying Eastlake for second with 110 points. Eisenhower managed to have just enough to win the team title, doing so with 110 points. “We were right there,” said Tahoma coach Gary Conner. “It was amazing.”

GIRLS SOCCER: Retz does it again, lifts Kentwood past Central Valley 2-1 in Class 4A state opener

There's something about this time of year that brings out the best in Reilly Retz. In last year's Class 4A state soccer playoffs, it was Retz who scored game-winning goals in Kentwood High's final two wins of the season, which led to a school-best third-place finish. Tuesday afternoon at Joe Albi Stadium in Spokane, Retz was up to her game-winning heroics once again.
