Volunteers can corn in Kent for South King County food banks; more help needed

AmeriCorps volunteers from King and Pierce counties as well as several elected officials participated in canning corn for 11 South King County food banks Friday at a Kent cannery at 1412 W. Morton St.
The volunteer event was part of AmeriCorps Week, a state and nationally recognized week of May 14-21 in which AmeriCorps volunteers from all across the country host events to showcase the positive work they do to improve communities, according to a Northwest Harvest media release.
Several groups including AmeriCorps VISTA, South King County Food Coalition, Northwest Harvest, Rotary First Harvest, United Way and the Church of Jesus Christ Latter-Day Saints Cannery in Kent partnered in the effort Friday to help the hungry.
The elected representatives included State Rep. Joe Fitzgibbon, D-Burien.
Volunteers are needed to help with canning corn in Kent on Thursdays and Fridays in May, June and July. The shifts are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.; 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and 12:30-4:30 p.m. Groups of up to 50 are welcome to schedule shifts by emailing the South King County Food Coalition at southking@firstharvest.org.
