Seattle Thunderbirds coach Steve Konowalchuk has signed a three-year contract extension.

Konowalchuk was in the last year of a four-year contract he signed with the team when he was named the franchise’s 16th head coach in June 2011.

“I am excited about the opportunity to stay with the T-Birds and to continue to build a winning culture with the organization,” said Konowalchuk in a Tuesday media release. “I am looking forward to continuing to work with the players, both veterans and rookies, as we work towards our goals this coming season. My family and I are very happy to call Seattle home.”

T-Birds General Manager Russ Farwell looks forward to keeping Konowalchuk as coach.

“We are very happy to have Steve secured as our coach for the next four years,” said Farwell. “Our team has showed steady improvement over the last three years and this is a very positive move for our franchise.”

Last season Konowalchuk guided the T-Birds to a 41-25-2-4 regular season record. The team advanced to the second round of the Western Hockey League playoffs with a 4-1 first round series win over the Everett Silvertips before losing to the Kelowna Rockets.

The T-Birds home opener is Saturday, Sept. 20, against the Everett Silvertips at 7:05 p.m. at the ShoWare Center.
