Kent Reporter receives WNPA awards

The Kent Reporter recently received several awards from the Washington Better Newspaper Contest.
Steve Hunter took second place for News Writer of the Year. He also was third in the Best Crime and Court Story category for his coverage of the William L. Phillip Jr. murder trial.
Editor Mark Klaas won in Best Front Page Design and took second place in Best Story on the Arts for his story, “Bringing back a legend”, describing how Ricky Nelson’s twin sons carried on the music of their father, a singer and songwriter.
Ross Coyle took second in Best Personality Profile Short for “Heart, home for others”, which described how a Kent woman had been a warm host for foreign exchange students for 26 years.
Coyle won in the Color Portrait category for “What’s all the buzz?”, illustrating the complexity of honeybees.
He also was third in Color Sports Photo – Action, for “Floored”, which showed Kentridge guard Deon Thomas celebrating as fans stormed the basketball court after the Chargers’ state-clinching regional playoff victory.
Rachel Ciampi won in Color Sports Photo – Action, for “Sky Climber”, which captured Kent-Meridian’s Juliana Adams climbing 10 feet, 6 inches to grab second place in the district pole vault.
Creative Services’ Julie Black took first places for her Mother’s Day advertisement and for her work in Business in the Valley, a non-tourism special section. She also was second in special sections work for the Senior Resource Guide
The Washington Newspaper Publishers Association announced contest winners during its 127th annual convention Oct. 3 in Chelan.
