For the Reporter

Miles Koules’ hat trick powered the Portland Winterhawks to a 4-0 win over the Seattle Thunderbirds at the Moda Center on Sunday night.

Seattle (19-16-2-2) had its season-high six-game win streak come to an end.

The T-Birds have a home-and-home series with the Tri-City Americans next weekend. They travel to Kennewick for a 7:05 game Friday, then host the Americans at 5:05 p.m. next Sunday. The game, originally scheduled for Saturday, was moved to Sunday because of the Seattle Seahawks divisional playoff game.

Portland (21-17-0-3) scored with 33 seconds left in the first period to take a 1-0 lead. Paul Bittner fed Miles Koules on a two-on-one break and Koules beat Seattle goalie Taran Kozun.

The Winterhawks took a 2-0 lead at 5:35 of the second period when Alex Overhardt tipped a centering pass from Alex Schoenborn through Kozun’s leg. Austin Gray had the second assist.

Koules scored on the power play 41 seconds into the third period to put the Winterhawks up 3-0. Layne Viveiros and Schoenborn had the assists.

The T-Birds pulled Kozun with just under three minutes left in the game on a power play for an extra attacker. Koules was able to score a shorthanded empty-net goal at 18:10 of the period to seal the victory for Portland.

Kozun had 21 saves on 24 shots and his record is now 17-11-2-2.

Hill made 29 saves to get the shutout and improve his record to 10-5-0-0.
