Kent Police determined a foul smell that a passerby along the Green River thought might be from a decomposing body turned out to be from rotten fish.

A passerby reported to Kent Police on Monday afternoon a foul odor coming from near Riverview Park below the Highway 167 overpass along the Green River.

The odor was similar to that of a decomposing animal or body, said police spokeswoman Melanie Robinson, in an email. Police investigated the incident, but the smell turned out to be associated with the river and rotting fish, Robinson said.

Police also opened up a suspicious bag found in the vicinity, but it only contained clothing items and tools and not any dead animals or a body. Police were unable to locate the owner of the items.
