Hockey tournament supports Cops With Cancer

It’s summer hockey on ice, all for a good cause.

Fifty-two area players, including one who flew in from San Francisco, competed on four teams at the sixth annual DJ Baskin Memorial Hockey Tournament at the Kent Valley Ice Centre this weekend.

The finals are Sunday.

Nearly all the proceeds raised from the three-day tournament go to Cops With Cancer in memory of Baskin, a Tukwila Police officer and hockey-playing teammate who died of cancer. The organization supports law enforcement officials fighting cancer.

Steve Day began the tournament six years ago and Dave Mosbach, a salesman, continued to organize and run the event.

The play is fast and loose.

“There’s no checking in this. We all have to go to work tomorrow. We don’t get paid for this,” Mosbach said after Saturday’s round-robin game.

To make it a success, the rink donates the ice and officials donate their time, Mosbach said.

Tournament officials hope to raise about $5,000-$6,000 this weekend.
