Expect road closures as crews install storm drainage pipe along Kent’s South 228th Street

Kent drivers can expect traffic detours over the next few months along South 228th Street from 64th Avenue South to the Interurban Trail in connection with a $5.2 million project to install new storm drainage pipe to stop Mill Creek flooding.

There will be multiple closures of the intersections of 64th Avenue South and 68th Avenue South starting Saturday, June 18 through the fall, according to city officials.

Crews from Kirkland-based MidMountain Contractors, Inc., will install 3,200 feet of 72-inch concrete storm drainage pipe along South 228th Street from a ditch at the Interurban Trail to a ditch at 64th Avenue S.

The new storm drainage pipe will alleviate flooding at 76th Avenue South along Mill Creek. That street often floods after heavy rainfall.

Crews also will relocate utilities for a future overpass separating South 228th Street from the Union Pacific Railroad tracks.

The project includes:

• A new 12-inch domestic water main to replace old, deteriorated pipes

• New water service lines

• Relocation of multiple utilities such as gas, electric, and sewer

• New concrete curbs and sidewalks where required

• New native plantings at the two ditches
