Verizon Wireless, Seahawks’ Tate launch second annual ‘Save it Seattle’ contest

Verizon Wireless and Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Golden Tate are teaming up to launch the second annual “Save it Seattle” contest.

The contest asks students, along with the community, to take a personal pledge against texting and driving. The participating South Puget Sound high school that receives the most pledges will win a meet and greet with Tate at their school.

The field includes Auburn, Auburn Riverside, Kentridge, Kentwood, Emerald Ridge, Decatur and Todd Beamer high schools.

The contest runs until Dec. 2.

Last year’s contest winner, Roosevelt High School, received a visit from Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson after collecting the most pledges.

Schools will collect pledge forms from students. Faculty, friends and family can pledge on behalf of their school by visiting InsidersGuide.vzw.com/SaveItSeattle.

A 2011 study finds nearly half of U.S. high school students aged 16 or older reported texting or emailing while driving in the past 30 days. Texting while driving was also found to be positively associated with other risky motor vehicle behaviors. (American Academy of Pediatrics).

Verizon Wireless offers a service for parents who wish to monitor the activity on their children’s device.
