Nominations for Pepsi Cola Handicap and Irish Day Handicap | Emerald Downs

Sophomores stretch out around two turns when Emerald Downs presents a stakes double-header for 3-year-olds Sunday, June 26. Colts and geldings race one mile in the Pepsi Cola Handicap and fillies take their turn in the Irish Day Handicap.
Showme Yourfriends and Winter Warlock, first and second in the May 30 Auburn Handicap at 6-½ furlongs, are among 11 colts and geldings nominated to the Pepsi Cola. Class Included, three-length winner of the May 29 Seattle Handicap at 6-½ furlongs, headlines seven fillies nominated to the Irish Day Handicap.
Registering the second biggest stakes upset in the track’s 16-season history, Showme Yourfriends came from slightly off the pace for a half-length victory over Winter Warlock in 1:15.05. Only No Giveaway at $122 in the 2005 Longacres Mile exceeds the $102.40 payoff on a $2 win ticket.
Doris Harwood could win the Pepsi Cola for the fourth straight year overall and the third straight year with a “Beach.” It would take a form reversal, but Avalon Beach, could follow in the hoof prints of Noosa Beach (2009) and Koala Beach (2010). Harwood also nominated Gdanz Xpress, a Liberty Gold gelding stakes-placed twice as a juvenile in 2010.
In the Irish Day, trainer Jim Penney and owners Michael and Amy Feuerborn could win the race for the second straight year. Sis’s Sis scored by a half-length last year en route to honors as Top 3-Year-Old Filly. Class Included carries their colors this year and is the horse to beat after her dominant victory in the Seattle.
Seventyprcentcocoa is the lone Washington-bred nominated to the Irish Day and comes off consecutive head defeats on the turf at Golden Gate Fields.
