The Kent Reporter Athletes of the Week for Jan. 2 are from Kentridge High School; Gio Moimoi (Sr.) basketball and Mackenzie Coble (Jr.) flag football.

What do you value in your sport or about your team?

Moimoi: In basketball, I value the fast paced action and the constant challenge to improve my skills.

Coble: I value our chemistry on and off the field, these girls are like another family to me. I couldn’t be more thankful for that.

What have you learned from your sport that you can take with you throughout your life/future?

Moimoi: Basketball has taught me about perseverance and overcoming challenges like tough shots not falling or hard losses. But more importantly, overcoming that to become a better player, person and team.

Coble: I’ve learned how important it is to stay calm and collected even when frustrated. When someone messes up keep encouraging them instead of tearing them down because when that happens to you, you want someone by your side to keep you up.

What do you do when you aren’t motivated and what helps you stay motivated?

Moimoi: Somethings that keep me motivated is my family, they are my pride and joy and I want to make them proud. Along with setting myself up for a successful future.

Coble: When I am tired and unmotivated I think of how far we could make it this postseason and push through not only for myself, but for my team as well. The girls around me are super supportive so it’s easy to give my all back for them.

Do you have a favorite pre-game meal?

Moimoi: Steak and mashed potatoes.

Coble: Starbucks grilled cheese and an energy drink.

What advice would you give to a teammate that is struggling?

Moimoi: I would say focus on what you can control. You can control your effort, attitude and execution. Don’t get down if the results are not there right away.

Coble: To talk to someone on the team about it because most likely one of us is going through something similar, especially if it is about flag football.

From the sidelines:

Moimoi: Gio has started the season on a high note averaging 24 PPG, 8 RPG, 2 APG, and 2 BPG through our first 6 games, but it has been his leadership that is helping shape the Chargers to reach our full potential. He is a kid that wants to be challenged and held accountable because he knows it will only make him a better player and person. I am very proud of his development on and off the court these last three years of coaching him.

Coble: Mackenzie has emerged as a remarkable force on both offense and defense, making a profound impact on the team’s 8-0 start to the season. She leads the team with 17 pass receptions, 11 spectacular touchdowns, and 9 crucial interceptions. Moreover, she is tied for second place with 19 flag pulls, showcasing her all-around skill. Mackenzie’s relentless competitive spirit and infectious energy inspire her teammates to reach their fullest potential, pushing them to be the best versions of themselves.
