Kent firefighters and King County Paramedics treated and transported three patients early Sunday morning after a stove-top pan fire flared up in the 24400 block of 64 Ave. S. shortly after midnight (12:34 a.m.)
Firefighters were initially dispatched to a possible residential fire, but found that the fire was confined to a pan of oil. The three burns took place when one of the patients attempted to throw the burning oil out the door of the home. The flames apparently flared up, causing severe burns to one adult and two children.
Three King County Medic units were called in to assist firefighters with the injuries. All three patients were transported to a local hospital.
The mobile home did not suffer any damage as a result of the fire and no one else was injured.
Due to privacy laws the names, ages, specific injuries, and hospital destination of the patients are not available.
Kitchen/stove-top fires are the most common type of fires seen in homes. The Kent Fire Department recommends the following to help reduce the chances of fire and injury when cooking:
1.Always keep the matching lid of any pan being used, next to the stove. If the pan catches on fire, use an oven mitt to place the lid on the pan, smothering the flames. Turn off the burner and let the pan cool. NEVER uncover the pan until it has a chance to cool.
2.Heat oil slowly.
3.Never leave the kitchen when cooking. Keep an eye on what you fry.
4.Have a fire extinguisher nearby and know how to use it.
5.Never move a burning pot or pan.
6.Never attempt to fight an oil fire with water.
7.Have working smoke alarms in your home.
