A 35-year-old Bellevue man and former Seattle high school assistant football coach faces charges of second-degree attempted rape of a child and communication with a minor for immoral purposes in connection with texts he allegedly sent to a 13-year-old Kent girl and agreeing to meet for sex with a girl in Renton.
That second girl turned out to be an undercover Kent Police detective who posed as a 13-year-old girl while texting the man, according to charging papers filed by King County prosecutors.
Omar P. Urrutia is scheduled to be arraigned Monday, Dec. 3 at the Norm Maleng Regional Justice Center in Kent, according to the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office. Urrutia is out on bail after two days in the Kent city jail following his Oct. 29 arrest by Kent Police.
Police arrested Urrutia, a former assistant football coach at Seattle’s Franklin High School, at the Renton Transit Center when he thought he was going to meet two young girls but instead met police officers who took him into custody.
Kent Police were tipped off about the incident Oct. 27 when the mother of the Kent girl found sexually explicit text messages on her cellphone that her daughter had exchanged with a man later identified as Urrutia, according to charging documents.
The mother told police the messages included references to sexual positions, negotiations for money, getting high and providing her daughter with alcohol. The mother posed as her daughter and exchanged several text messages that invited her to spend the night with Urrutia and referred to oral sex.
Detectives then initiated an undercover investigation because they believed there was reason to believe Urrutia wanted to have sexual contact with the 13-year-old girl. The age of consent in Washington is 16.
A detective posed as a 13-year-old girl and text messaged with Urrutia that eventually led to the agreement to meet in Renton.
During an interview with detectives, Urrutia, who was an assistant coach this past season with the Franklin football team, said he had met the girl last year at a gym. He said the girl told him she was 18.
Urrutia admitted to text messaging the girl. He later told detectives he needed help and counseling. When detectives asked him if he was attracted to younger girls he replied “Not all the time, no.”
The 13-year-old girl told detectives she had met Urrutia in the summer at a store parking lot after a friend asked him for a dollar. He told the girl he would give her $5 for her phone number, which he received.
The girl said she met Urrutia twice in person and went to his apartment once when the man provided her and her friend with alcohol. The second meeting was at an apartment complex. She said she never had sexual contact with Urrutia although he inquired about it and was willing to pay for it.
She thought Urrutia seemed “creepy” because of how desperate he was for sex. She saved his number in her mother’s phone under the name of “Weirdo.”
Urrutia has prior convictions for minor operating a vehicle after consuming alcohol in 1996; driving with a suspended license in 2000; fourth-degree assault in 2003 and a DUI in 2010.
