Expect the matchup of the season Saturday night at French Field, when the Seattle Majestics play host to the Sacramento Sirens.
The two teams are considered the powerhouses of the Western Conference in the Independent Women’s Football League, and each will be walking onto the field undefeated.
That’s the way the Majestics (2-0) want to be walking off the field after Saturday’s game against the Sirens (2-0). Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
“There is no doubt – Sacramento has always been a challenge for us,” said Camille Head, who co-owns the Majestics and plays wide receiver.
“We did defeat them twice,” she said of last season, but noted Sacramento was without one of its head coaches, who had led to them to past winning seasons. This year, he’s back, and Sacramento has a thing or two it wants to prove.
“They have a sour taste in their mouth from us defeating them the last time,” Head said.
With that kind of rivalry, the mood on the turf will be intense.
“I think the fans are going to see an incredible matchup from two very strong teams,” Head noted. “We’re definitely huge rivals.”
Statistically the teams have some similarity: the Majestics have wracked up about 700 yards in two games, while the Sirens have posted 800. But the Sirens’ offense is exceptionally deadly, having amassed 117 points, compared to the Majestics’ 54.
The Sirens were the 2007 Pacific Northwest Division champions, while the Majestics had that honor in 2008.
Both teams are big frogs in proverbially small ponds, so French Field is going to be the epicenter of a major shakedown.
“Basically the Battle of the West is coming,” Head said.
The Majestics have ample reason to hope for fan support at their second home game in Kent. At their season opener April 11 – a 34-0 shutout of Corvallis Pride – the team drew about 700 supporters, who were vocal throughout the game.
Head is hoping for more of the same Saturday.
“We are looking for another big turnout – we’re hoping that the fans who made it out to the first game, will bring their friends to this one,” she said.”Hopefully we’ll see close to 1,000 by the end of the season.
Majestics to watch Saturday include veteran lineman Faatuiese Sesepasara (50), who has been a part of the team since 2003. “She’s a pretty solid player,” Head noted. And quarterback Michel Volk (10): “This is going to be the game we need to get the offense rolling, so we expect big things from her,” Head explained.
Also keep an eye peeled for linebackers Casey Rivas (5) and Shannon Fitch (47), who are expected to help slow down Sacramento’s hardboiled offensive line.
