A juvenile playing with a lighter led to a condo fire in the 11400 block of SE 257 Place.

Firefighters from Kent and the Valley Regional Fire Authority were dispatched at 2:13 p.m. to a report of flames coming from the bedroom of a first floor unit.

Everyone was able to escape the condo before help arrived and no one was injured. The fire was quickly extinguished and most of the damage was limited to a single bedroom.

A small amount of smoke traveled into other parts of the condo and into adjoining units. While the occupants of the affected condo will have to move out due to the fire, none of the other units in the building were damaged.

According to the fire investigator, the fire was caused by a juvenile who was playing with a lighter in a closet. When the contents of the closet ignited, he alerted his mother who quickly got everyone out. Because of the age of the juvenile, no charges will be filed by the investigator.

Red Cross is assisting the family with essentials and Hawthorne Suites in downtown Kent is providing housing for the night through a program they have to help the victims of fires.
