A mother was struck and killed while in a Kent crosswalk at about 2 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of East Smith Street and State Avenue North.

A driver of a SUV was making a left turn from State Avenue North onto East Smith Street and did not see the woman in the crosswalk, according to a Kent Police media release. The woman was walking northbound in the crosswalk with her two children in a stroller. The children were unhurt.

Police did not have names, ages and hometowns of the mother and the SUV driver to release as of Tuesday evening, said Cmdr. Robert Hollis. He said the driver was an elderly woman.

Officers and firefighters who first arrived performed life-saving efforts on the woman. Paramedics transported the woman to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, but the woman had died by the time they arrived at the hospital.

Police traffic investigators said drugs and alcohol do not appear to be a factor. Officers continue to investigate what caused the crash.

Police closed multiple streets downtown near the crash.
