Fain sworn in as District 5 representative on King County Council

District includes Kent, Renton, Tukwila, SeaTac and Des Moines

Steffanie Fain, who was sworn in Nov. 25 as the King County Council member for District 5, pledges results-driven, community focused leadership.

Fain, of Normandy Park, was sworn in as the newest member of the council in Seattle. District 5 includes Kent, Renton, Tukwila, SeaTac and Des Moines. Fain defeated Peter Kwon in the Nov. 4 election to replace Dave Upthegrove, of Des Moines, who resigned in January after his election as state lands commissioner. De’Sean Quinn was appointed by the council to fill in the rest of year for Upthegrove but didn’t run for the seat.

Fain’s swearing-in marks a historic milestone for King County as she becomes the first Korean American – and the first Asian American in nearly four decades – to serve on the King County Council, according to a council media release.

“I am deeply honored to serve the people of South King County, grounded in our shared values of affordable communities, safe neighborhoods, and accountable government,” Fain said. “Today marks both a beginning and a responsibility. District 5 is home to remarkable diversity, economic strength, and resilient neighborhoods. It has also grown significantly, and with that growth comes the need for more intentional investment, more responsive services, and a stronger alignment between District 5 needs and county action.

“South King County deserves practical, community centered leadership focused on delivering tangible results that improve daily life for residents. That includes expanding access to housing and behavioral health supports; strengthening public safety and first response; and ensuring that every tax dollar is used effectively and transparently. I’m ready to bring urgency, partnership, and clear-eyed accountability to the Council so every neighborhood in District 5 has the opportunity to thrive.”
