A 45-year-old Kent woman died while in custody at the City of Kent Corrections Facility, 1230 Central Ave. S.
At about 8:05 a.m. Tuesday, April 22, a corrections officer found a nonresponsive inmate in a holding cell, according to an April 22 Kent Police news release. The woman was found unconscious and not breathing. Officers called 911 for medics and began CPR. Despite their efforts, the woman did not survive.
The woman had been in the jail since April 19, according to police.
Kent Police requested The Valley Independent Investigative Team to conduct the investigation. At this time the cause of death is not determined. The King County Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the cause of death and release the identity of the woman.
The city jail opened in 1986. It houses misdemeanor offenders arrested by police as well as those sentenced to less than one year in Kent Municipal Court, which is next to the jail. The crimes include drunk driving, domestic violence, minor assaults and petty theft. Felony cases are handled by King County’s Maleng Regional Justice Center jail in Kent or the downtown Seattle county jail.
