Jamie Perry has decided she won’t seek re-election this year to the Kent City Council.
Perry, who was appointed to the council in 2008 to fill a vacancy and was elected in 2009, will focus more on her full-time job and family.
“After careful consideration and discussions with my family, I have decided not to run for re-election,” Perry said Tuesday in an emailed statement. “This was not an easy decision but I do believe it is the right choice at the right time.”
Perry’s four-year term expires at the end of this year.
“It has been an honor to serve my hometown for the last four-plus years,” she said. “I appreciate the time that everyone has taken out of their busy lives to attend meetings, write emails to the council on critical issues, or voice their concerns in other ways. A lot has been accomplished during this time – both at the city and regional level – and I will continue to work hard for the citizens of Kent for the remainder of this year.”
Perry ran unopposed in 2009 when she was still known by her maiden name of Jamie Danielson.
“This decision will allow me to focus on another passion of mine: serving the people of King County as a family law attorney,” she said. “Every day I have the opportunity to directly help others and I am very excited to build upon this work in the years to come. I also look forward to spending more time with my family as my two young girls begin school in the next few years.
I want to thank everyone that has supported me during my time on the Council and I look forward to continued service in the years to come.”
With Perry’s Position No. 2 to be an open spot, several candidates are expected to run for the seat.
Candidates can officially file May 13-17 with King County Elections, although many declare earlier and must file with the Washington State Public Disclosure Commission once they announce their candidacy, place ads or raise campaign funds. The Primary Election is Aug. 6 and the General Election Nov. 5. The two candidates with the most votes in the Primary advance to the General Election.
