Kent candidate withdraws from House race

Family crisis spurs Elizabeth Albertson's political departure

Elizabeth Albertson, D-Kent, has withdrawn from the race for state House Position One in the 33rd Legislative District, her campaign announced Friday.

“It is with sadness and regret that we make this announcement,” said Campaign Chairman Lee Somerstein, “but Elizabeth faces a family crisis that will require all her attention in the coming weeks and months. Our prayers are with Elizabeth and her family.”

Somerstein in a phone interview noted the candidate is stepping out of the race due to the illness of two family members.

Albertson announced her candidacy to replace retiring Rep. Shay Schual-Berke more than a month ago, and had been steadily growing a base of supporters.

“Elizabeth has asked me to thank everyone who has contributed time, money and support to this effort,” Somerstein said. “We know, with her experience, intellect, energy and passion, she will make an outstanding legislator in the future. We have not heard the last from this outstanding community leader.

“Elizabeth also has asked that her friends throw their support behind the other Democratic candidate in the race, Tina Orwall,” added Somerstein, of the Normandy Park resident and former chairwoman of the 33rd District Democratic Party. “Ms. Orwall stands for the Democratic Party values we all cherish and it is time for us all to unite and keep this House seat in the Democratic Caucus.”
