The cleanup seven years ago of contaminated soil at the former Valley I-5 RV site at 23051 Military Road S., in Kent continues to protect public health and the environment, according to a recent periodic review by the state Department of Ecology.
The state reviews sites that have undergone cleanup if the cleanup included a special condition that must be maintained on the property. The reviews occur every five years. Crews cleaned up releases of gasoline to soil in 2004-05.
Three petroleum underground storage tanks (USTs), including two 2,000-gallon gasoline tanks and one 1,000-gallon used oil tank, a pump and associated fuel lines were removed in 1998 from the east side of the southern building.
Approximately seven cubic yards of impacted soils were removed and disposed of off-site. Soil sampling results indicated that petroleum contaminated soil remained in the vicinity of the former gasoline USTs, very close to the east side of the southern building and possibly underneath the building. These areas are capped with pavement or building. No further cleanup action is required at this time, according to a Nov. 29 state Ecology media release.
The state seeks public comment on the review of the site through Jan. 2.
