Kent Police reportedly saw a man sleeping behind the wheel of a car parked at the Rock Creek Landing apartment complex and discovered the vehicle had been stolen.
Officers arrested the man for investigation of possession of a stolen vehicle as well as King County warrants for second-degree assault and second-degree burglary after the man failed to appear in court to face those two charges, according to the police report.
Police went to the apartment complex at about 6:34 a.m. Aug. 4 in the 23200 block of 88th Avenue South to investigate a report of a verbal domestic dispute. The officers didn’t find any dispute but saw a man sleeping in a red Honda Civic parked at the complex.
When officers ran the vehicle’s license plate, they found out the car had been stolen the prior day from an Auburn home. Officers knocked on the driver’s door window to wake up the man. They also noticed the door locks had been damaged.
The man told police he had obtained the car from a friend but later admitted he knew his friend didn’t own a car. The Honda had a single key in the ignition that had file marks on it, the type of key known as a “jiggler” because it is used to break into cars and steal them.
When officers contacted the Civic’s owner, he said he had video surveillance of the theft of his car. An officer watched the video and saw a man get dropped off by another car, walk up to the Civic, get in and about 30 seconds later drive away in the Honda. The man in the video had a similar tattoo and clothing to the man police arrested at the apartment complex.
The man remained in custody this week at the King County jail at the Maleng Regional Justice Center in Kent with bail set at $215,000.
Disorderly conduct
Police arrested a man for investigation of disorderly conduct after he reportedly yelled at customers and tellers at about 12:32 p.m. Aug. 2 at the Chase Bank branch at 512 W. Smith St.
Officers responded to a report about a man disrupting business and refusing to leave the bank, according to the police report.
An officer talked to the man outside the bank and noted the man seemed extremely intoxicated with a strong odor of alcohol coming from him. He also had watery and bloodshot eyes.
“I did not call you,” the man told officers as they approached him.
A bank employee told police they could not help the man because he was too intoxicated. The man then started to yell at tellers and customers. The bank manager asked police to trespass the man from the bank for life.
Officers told the man he had been banned from the bank, the bank would close his account and a check with his money would be mailed to him.
Harassment
Officers arrested a man for investigation of harassment after he allegedly placed a phone call from the city of Kent jail and threatened to kill a woman.
A woman called 911 on Aug. 2 to report a threatening phone call from a man who had been arrested earlier in the day after he allegedly kicked in the Kent woman’s apartment door and assaulted her, according to the police report.
The man then called the woman later and said, “You better watch your back. This is not over yet. I’m going to kill you.”
Police checked with a jail corrections officer who said the man had used a jail phone and he overhead the man yell something like, “This ain’t over yet.” The man claimed he had been talking to his mother.
