Kent Police Blotter: Oct. 14-26

Incidents include 76 Station robbery, Key Bank robbery, bus stop assault, stolen wigs

A sampling of Kent Police incidents Oct. 14-26:

Oct. 14

BB gun at library: Officers were dispatched to Kaibara Park, at West Meeker Street and First Avenue North, for a report of threats involving a firearm, called in by a nearby business owner. The involved individual left the scene before officers arrived. Shortly after, officers were flagged down at the Kent Library, 212 Second Ave. N., where security reported a subject had placed a firearm on a table before returning it to his waistband. Officers contacted the subject, who discarded what was later determined to be a realistic-looking BB gun. Witnesses at the library stated they were not alarmed. The subject was identified as the same individual who had violated an earlier anti-harassment order and committed trespass at the LARC Apartments, 1001 First Ave. N.

Oct. 15

Child left in car: 4:23 p.m., officers responded to a report of a stolen vehicle with a child inside at 1111 W. James St. Initial information was relayed through a family member and included conflicting details. It later turned out that the suspect, the victim, and a third party were all related. The child’s mother had placed the child in the vehicle and briefly gone inside when the suspect drove off. The child was later found unharmed at an apartment in Ventana. The suspect was arrested for second-degree custodial interference. Both the suspect and the reporting party were under the influence of alcohol. The child was evaluated by fire personnel and transported to a hospital as a precaution.

Domestic disturbance: Officers responded to a domestic disturbance at the Tip Top trailer park, 23858 Pacific Highway S. Upon arrival, the suspect fled on foot toward Thea Bowman Apartments and attempted to evade capture by diving into a patch of sticker bushes. The suspect was taken into custody.

Oct. 16

76 Station robbery: 9:59 p.m., officers responded to a robbery at the 76 Station, 8800 S. 180th St. The victim reported that a masked suspect entered the store, brandished a handgun, and demanded money from the register. The victim complied, and the suspect fled the scene.

Oct. 17

Threats with knife: Officers responded to a report of threats involving a knife. The victim had left the residence before calling 911. Officers set up containment and began working on a search warrant. The suspect, who had barricaded herself in a bedroom, was eventually persuaded to exit peacefully and was taken into custody without incident.

Bus stop robbery: 12:45 p.m., officers responded to a robbery near 25200 Pacific Highway South. The victim had just exited a bus when several juveniles assaulted him, rendering him unconscious. The suspects stole the victim’s phone and cash. The phone was later recovered at the scene.

Motorcycle pursuit: Officers attempted to stop a suspect fleeing on a motorcycle. A brief pursuit ended when the suspect abandoned the bike and fled on foot. A K-9 track led to the suspect, who was found hiding under a vehicle and taken into custody. The case was referred to detectives for filing.

Oct. 18

Key Bank robbery: 12:55 p.m., officers responded to a robbery at Key Bank, 10300 SE 256th St. The suspect, wearing a mask and a hooded sweatshirt, handed a note to the teller and received approximately $1,380 in cash, along with a tracker, which was later found abandoned nearby.

Oct. 19

Passed out in vehicle: Officers conducted a welfare check at Country Glen Apartments, 27400 132nd Ave. SE, for a male passed out in a vehicle. Officers observed a firearm between the driver’s seat and the center console. They used de-escalation tactics and safely took the individual into custody without incident.

Deli robbery: 5:26 p.m., officers responded to a robbery at Chandler’s Bay Deli, 1018 Central Ave. N. A female suspect began shoplifting and, when confronted, assaulted the victim and claimed to have a firearm. The suspect was later identified and arrested at the transit center.

Oct. 22

Bus stop assault: 7:38 a.m., officers responded to the area of 21800 84th Avenue South for a report of an assault. The victim stated they were waiting at a bus stop when an unknown individual approached, began yelling, and struck them multiple times with a collapsible baton. The victim was able to flee the area.

Carjacking: 1:55 p.m., officers responded to a carjacking in the parking lot of a grocery store near 13100 Kent-Kangley Road. The victim reported being approached by two individuals who demanded she exit her vehicle. One suspect entered the vehicle from the passenger side, prompting the victim to exit. The suspects fled in the vehicle.

Oct. 23

Firearm threat: 9:25 p.m., officers responded to Kent Commons, 525 Fourth Ave. N., after a victim reported being threatened with a firearm. The victim had been selling light-up toys near the ShoWare Center when a suspect pretended to make a purchase. As the victim began making change, the suspect displayed a firearm. The victim fled the area.

Oct. 24

Protest at Smith’s office: Officers responded to a protest at U.S. Rep. Adam Smith’s office at Centerpointe Business Park, 6811 S. 204th St. Protesters were removed from the building by security but remained on private property. Officers advised the group, per city attorney guidance, that they could only protest on public sidewalks. The group complied and dispersed shortly after due to heavy rain.

Arson fire: Officers responded to a report of arson after a neighbor witnessed a male set fire to his ex-girlfriend’s vehicle, which was parked near residential structures. The fire had been extinguished before officers arrived, but accelerants were observed around the vehicle. The suspect was arrested and booked.

Stolen wigs: 10:34 a.m., officers responded to a burglary at Hair Shop NW, 18100 E. Valley Highway. The front door lock had been broken, and approximately $10,000 worth of wigs were stolen. Surveillance footage of the incident was obtained.

Oct. 25

DUI driver flees: Officers attempted to stop a suspected DUI driver in a stolen vehicle near East James Street and 94th Avenue South. A brief pursuit was initiated, but the suspect fled out of jurisdiction and was not apprehended.

Oct. 26

Stolen vehicle pursuit: Officers assisted Auburn Police with the pursuit of a stolen vehicle that entered Kent city limits. A Kent officer successfully deployed stop sticks, disabling the vehicle near the BNSF yard off A Street. The vehicle was driven until the rim wore down to the brake rotor. Three juveniles fled on foot and were taken into custody.
