Kent Police arrested a 43-year-old Maple Valley man and a 40-year-old Seattle woman on felony warrants after an officer spotted a reported stolen vehicle.

At about 2:15 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, an officer was notified that a stolen 2004 Chevy Silverado pickup was downtown near East Smith Street and East Titus Street, according to a Sept. 25 Kent Police news release.

The officer immediately began to search the area and located the truck unoccupied in a parking lot near the 25900 block of 104th Avenue SE. He placed a terminator behind a tire, (to deflate the tire in case the truck tried to flee), and along with a few other officers, hid close by to see if the suspect driver would return.

At about 2:37 p.m., a male exited a nearby store and entered the truck. The officers immediately activated their emergency lights, but the driver decided to leap back out of the truck and tried to run away, according to police.

Three officers pursued the man on foot, yelling commands for him to stop, but he thought he just might just be able to outpace them, so he kept running. Officers took him into custody after a short jog, according to police.

Turns out the man had a King County trafficking in stolen property warrant for $5,050, reportedly had drugs on him and exited the stolen vehicle in full view of the officers. Once he was in custody and read his Miranda rights, he told officers about a reported female counterpart and said she was still inside the store where they found the stolen car.

The woman had a warrant out of Skagit County Sheriff’s Office for failure to appear in court for first-degree robbery, second-degree assault by strangulation and first-degree kidnapping.

The woman had attempted to quietly walk away from the area after watching her buddy get chased, but once the officers were notified that she had been in the stolen car, they fanned out. Two officers were nearby and joined the search for the woman. The officers and a detective quickly located her walking nearby and placed her into custody.

In addition to her warrant, officers arrested her for investigation for stealing items from the store she had entered, according to police. That property was recovered.
