Kent resident Melanie Hope tells her survivor's story at the Purple Lights Night 2011 tree lighting event Saturday in Covington.

Victoria Throm, the founder of the Covington Domestic Violence Task Force, presented the Purple Lights Nights 2011 tree lighting event Saturday in Covington, which also featured Melanie Hope, a resident of Kent.

Hope told her survivor’s story, “Message of Hope” and sang “The Greatest Love of All.”

The program included live music by the band Train Wreck, dramatic scenes by the Kentwood High Players and a reading of a poem by Paulette Kelly, “I got Flowers Today” by Martina McBride.

Following the program the the lights on the tree were lighted.
