The city of Kent Severe Weather Shelter at Kent Lutheran Church will remain open Friday night due to power outages and snow.
Kent Lutheran Church is at 336 Second Ave. S. in downtown Kent.
Check in and registration starts at 9 p.m.. At 7 a.m. Saturday, the shelter closes and all must vacate/
Priority is given to homeless families with children who are living on the streets or in vehicles, but the shelter also is available for unaccompanied women and men; separate sleeping space has been prepared for men, women, and for families with children.
The shelter is operated by Catholic Community Services staff and volunteers from Kent Lutheran Church and the greater Kent community. All must register at the door. As with all shelters, rules for the health and safety of clients, staff and the broader community will apply.
The city has also opened two warming shelters Friday to assist those who are without power and heat in their homes. The following locations are open to the public:
Kent Commons: 525 Fourth Ave. N, open until 5 p.m.
Kent Senior Activity Center: 600 E. Smith St., open until 4:30 p.m.
Kent area residents are encouraged to take advantage of these shelters if they are without power at their homes. Residents are advised to use extreme caution when traveling outdoors. In addition to the frozen ground conditions, tree branches and power lines are an overhead danger due to the freezing rain.
There are shelters open in Renton, Federal Way, Bellevue, and Seattle. Please contact the Crisis Clinic by dialing 211 to access shelter information in these other areas.
