Jackie Nguyen, a junior at Kentridge High School, took second place in the 21st annual national high school poster contest from the New York-based The Christophers.
Nguyen won $500 for her computer-based photo of a man planting trees with the Mahatma Gandhi message of “Be the change you want to see in the world,” according to a May 9 media release from The Christophers, a nonprofit group founded by a Maryknoll priest in 1945 that uses mass media to encourage all individuals to make a positive difference in the world.
The theme of the annual contest is “You can make a difference.”
The group announced the eight winners out of more than 1,000 entries from high schools throughout the world. Students employed a wide range of media including photography, computer art, drawing, painting and collage.
A student from Maryland won the $1,000 first-place prize for a photo-based poster that depicts a father walking hand-in-hand with his son down a school hallway to illustrate the importance of parental guidance in a child’s life. The group also gave out awards for third place and five honorable mentions.
