Highline Community College’s Rachel Moyer of Kent was named to the All-Washington Academic Team for her achievements in the classroom, involvement on campus and work in community service.

Alisa Gramann of Seatac also earned honors.

“We are proud to have Rachel and Alisa as Highline’s All-Washington Scholars this year,” said President Dr. Jack Bermingham. “Their outstanding achievements both inside and outside the classroom demonstrate the types of academic growth and success that merit national recognition.”

Moyer (pictured) and Gramann and other top scholars from the state’s 34 community and technical colleges will be recognized during the March 22 awards ceremony at South Puget Sound Community College in Olympia.

The Northwest Education Loan Association and KeyBank have partnered to honor each team member with a $750 scholarship.

Moyer, 31, is a member of the Highline honors program and is pursuing a degree in English. She is an entrepreneur, operating her own spa business. Moyer boasts a 3.86 GPA, which drives her aspirations of becoming a journalist and obtaining a Ph.D. Despite struggling with dyslexia and stuttering issues as a child, she has fought to overcome these challenges and now serves as a writing tutor and mentor on campus for her peers.

While Moyer’s achievements include the vice president’s honor roll, president of the honors leadership team, Phi Theta Kappa and the Academic Achievement Award, her greatest accomplishment is beating her thyroid cancer diagnosis in 2010.

Gramann, 18, is a journalism major and the current editor-in-chief of the Thunderword, Highline’s student newspaper. She resides on the vice president’s honor roll, holding a 3.91 GPA and is a member of Phi Theta Kappa.

In 2011, Gramann was recognized with the Outstanding Program Contributions Award for her work and dedication to the Thunderword. She hopes to focus on world events and global issues in her writing career. In her free time, she volunteers for numerous organizations such as World Vision and the Seattle Aquarium.

The All-Washington Academic Team program is sponsored by Washington Association of Community and Technical Colleges, Trustees Association of Community and Technical Colleges, State Board for Community & Technical Colleges and Phi Theta Kappa.
