King County Library System announced systemwide closures of their libraries in response to the coronavirus pandemic.
KCLS announced in a press release on Friday that it would be closed from March 13 through at least April 13.
“Like our neighboring library systems in Seattle, and Pierce and Snohomish counties, this decision was made out of the utmost concern for the health, safety, and well-being of our patrons, staff, and the community at-large,” the release read. “During the physical closure of our buildings, we are encouraging patrons to use KCLS online services and resources.”
They also announced that they are exploring ways to offer limited services and putting together plans for library staff to continue working and to receive pay during the closures.
In the meantime, patrons of the library are allowed to keep checked-out items until re-open or further notice, and the library system has waived all late fees accrued between March 1 and April 30. They are also extending the due dates on holds to April 30. KCLS said they will continue to monitor the situation and follow mandates from Gov. Jay Inslee and Public Health – Seattle & King County.
“Public libraries have always been about community, and the safety of our communities is paramount,” the release read. “We value your understanding of our decision during this challenging time.”
