Kent Police arrested a man for investigation of fourth-degree assault after he reportedly punched another inmate in the city jail during a dispute over a sleeping mat in a holding cell.

The incident occurred at about 11:03 p.m. July 29 at the city jail, 1230 Central Ave. S., according to the police report. Jail staff called police because the inmate who was shoved wanted to press charges.

An officer’s review of video footage showed a man laying on a mat inside a holding cell when another recently booked inmate entered the cell, urinated  in the latrine and then had a confrontation with the man sleeping on the mat.

The man on the mat got up to get the attention of jail staff after the other man demanded his mat. The man who took the mat then shoved the other man away from the cell door. The two were about to fight when jail staff entered the cell and separated the two men.

The man who reportedly shoved the other man denied he assaulted the man. During the investigation, the arrested man yelled profanities at the officer as well as jail staff.

Malicious mischief

Officers arrested a man for investigation of third-degree malicious mischief after he allegedly kicked down the front door of his ex-wife’s house on July 26 in the 11300 block of Southeast 227th Place.

The woman called 911 after she heard a loud pounding noise, looked out her window and saw her ex-husband trying to pry open the front door, according to the police report.

The woman said her ex-husband had moved out in March and the divorce became final July 16. She said he no longer had any property at the home.

The ex-husband walked out of the house after he kicked the door down. He told police he hadn’t slept in the past five days. He said he didn’t know why he broke down the door. He said he left the house after he realized he didn’t live there anymore.

When officers arrived, the man told them he had a handgun. Officers searched the man and found the gun. The man had a concealed weapon permit.

Obstructing

Police arrested a man for investigation of obstructing an officer after he reportedly refused to cooperate with an officer who stopped him as he walked away from a woman July 26 in the 11000 block of Southeast 240th Street.

An officer saw a woman walking eastbound along Southeast 240th Street who was crying and screaming while following a man who also was walking eastbound on the street, according to the police report.

The officer asked both the woman and man to stop. The woman stopped but the man kept walking initially before he stopped and called the officer a racist. After the officer handcuffed the man, the man started to put his foot through the loop of his arms made by the handcuffs in an attempt to get his hands in front of him.

The officer saw that as a threatening move, shoved the man to the ground and put his knee on the man’s stomach to hold him down until other officers assisted with detaining the man. Police advised the man they had the authority to tell him to stop and if he refuses it is a misdemeanor.

The woman told officers she knew the man and they had a verbal dispute in her apartment before the man left and she followed him.

Identity theft

Officers arrested a man for investigation of identity theft and making a false statement to an officer after he was pulled over following an illegal turn about about 12:57 p.m. July 29 on Pacific Highway South near South 216th Street.

An officer pulled over the vehicle after it turned on to Pacific Highway, according to the police report.

The driver didn’t have a license and initially gave the officer a name of another man. Police eventually determined the true identity of the man and discovered he had his license suspended for reckless driving.

A passenger in the car was the registered owner of the vehicle. Police cited the passenger for a defective brake light and no proof of insurance.
