  • Kent American Legion Post 15 will sponsor a Memorial Day service in cooperation with Kentwood High School Junior ROTC 10 a.m. May 30 at Hillcrest Cemetary, 1005 Reiten Rd.
  • There will also be a breakfast 7:30-9 a.m. at the Legion Post, 25406 97th Pl. S. Kent.
  • The Tahoma National Cemetery Memorial Day service is scheduled for 1 p.m. May 30. The cemetery is located at 18600 SE 240 St. Kent.
  • The Kent Historical Museum scheduled a Memorial Day ceremony at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 28 on the museum grounds to honor the memory of the U.S. armed forces personnel who have passed away. The ceremony will be at the museum’s Blue Star Memorial by-way marker.

The event is open to the public and will include a flag ceremony.

The Blue Star Memorial program began after World War II. The National Garden Clubs inaugurated the program to be a living memorial to honor American armed forces. Beginning in New Jersey in 1944, Blue Star Memorial Markers have been placed on highways across the United States. State Route 99 is Washington’s Blue Star Memorial highway.

The Kent Historical Museum is the only location of a Blue Star Memorial Marker in the area. The site was dedicated on Sept. 27, 2006 by the Greater Kent Historical Society and the Eastbrook Garden Club to recognize all past, present and future veterans who have served or will serve in the United States’ armed forces.

This Memorial Day event is sponsored by the Greater Kent Historical Society. For more information, contact the museum at 253-854-4330 or online at kenthistoricalmuseum.org.

The Greater Kent Historical Society is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that promotes the discovery, preservation and dissemination of knowledge about the history of the greater Kent area. The Kent Historical Museum is located in the historic Bereiter House on East Smith Street, near the heart of downtown Kent. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. and admission is by a suggested $2 donation. GKHS relies on the partnership of the city of Kent and the King County Landmarks and Heritage Commission, as well as the support, time and efforts of its members and volunteers.
