Motorcyclist seriously injured in Kent crash on East Hill

Collision occurred Wednesday afternoon, July 23 in 13300 block of Kent-Kangley Road

A motorcyclist suffered life-threatening injuries after a collision with a car at about 12:27 p.m. Wednesday, July 23 in the 13300 block of SE Kent-Kangley Road on the East Hill in Kent.

Initial reports indicated that a motorcycle was traveling at high speed eastbound on Kent-Kangley Road when it collided with the side of a red Toyota sedan, according to Kent Police. Kent-Kangley Road is also known as SE 272nd Street and State Route 516.

Officers located the motorcycle driver with severe life-threatening injuries. Officers and Puget Sound Regional Fire Authority Firefighters administered lifesaving first aid to stabilize him before he was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for additional treatment, according to police. The identify of the motorcycle driver has not been confirmed at this time.

The driver of the sedan, a 45-year-old Kent woman, did not sustain injuries, according to police. She remained at the crash scene and is cooperating with the investigation. There were no indications that she was impaired at the time of the collision.

The Kent Police Traffic Investigation Unit was called in to conduct the investigation. Investigators will be working to determine the chain of events that led to the collision, including whether speed was a factor.

“We had mixed descriptions of what occurred from witnesses, but we do believe the speed of the motorcycle was a factor,” Police Chief Rafael Padilla said in an email.

The road was at least partially closed for a little more than three hours while police investigated the crash, Padilla said.

The crash was near a busy intersection that sits just north of Safeway and south of Trader Joe’s.
