Neighborhoods are invited to participate Aug. 5 in the City of Kent’s National Night Out program, designed to fight crime.

National Night Out is a nationwide campaign focused on helping neighbors get to know each other better and to be aware of potential criminal activity. Neighborhood organizers can register their event with the City of Kent.

Events can include potlucks, barbecues, dessert socials and any other ideas to gather neighbors to heighten crime awareness and let criminals know that neighborhoods are working together to watch out for crime, according to a Kent Police media release.

Kent Police and other city officials will visit the neighborhood events on National Night Out. Events can start as early as 5 p.m. and run until 9 p.m.

To register a neighborhood event, go to www.ci.kent.wa.us/police. The registration deadline is Aug. 1. The city can provide banners, invitations and balloons to promote events. For more information, call Sara Wood with the Kent Police at 253-856-5851.

“Not only is National Night Out a great opportunity for neighbors to get to know neighbors, it also develops a strong sense of community, and strong community helps us all to build a safe community,” Kent Police Chief Steve Strachan said in the media release.
