The U-1 Oh Boy! Oberto defended its title on Sunday afternoon at the 2009 Lamb Weston Columbia Cup in the Tri-Cities.

Behind driver Steve David, the U-1 Oh Boy! Oberto delivered one of its finest weekends to date, fending off Kent’s Jeff Bernard, driving the U-5 Formulaboats.com, and traditional power Dave Villwock of Auburn, behind the U-16 Ellstrom’s Elam Plus, to capture his second straight Lam Weston Columbia Cub title.

In addition to winning the title, David also secured a near flawless weekend, winning all four heats, the only setback coming from a lane infraction on Saturday. The Oh Boy! Oberto will head into the Chevrolet Cup at Seafair on Lake Washington this weekend among the favorites.

David scored 1,450 points over the course of the event, well ahead of Villwock’s 564.

Last year, the Oh Boy! Oberto won its first national championship in its 48-year history. It was David’s third. In addition David was the top qualifier at more than half of the races.

Final order of finish: 1st-Steve David, Oh Boy! Oberto, 2nd-Jeff Bernard U-5 Formulaboats.com, 3rd JW Myers U-37 Hoss Mortgage Investors, 4th-Dave Villwock U-16 Ellstrom’s Elam Plus, 5th-Kip Brown U-17 West Pasco Family Dental, 6th Brian Perkins U-48 Whirlpool Presents Miss Albert Lee.
