The Renton couple who fled wildfires earlier this month that claimed the life of their 1-year-old, are continuing to recover at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
Jamie and Jacob Hyland remain in serious condition while in intensive care after being caught in the Cold Springs Fire in Okanogan County during a short weekend trip. The hospital released a video of a family member speaking on how the two are doing at this time.
Dawnmarie Baxter, Jamie Hyland’s sister, said in a video from UW Medicine that the couple has been “miraculously recovering” and that the two were doing well during their recovery from extensive burns at Harborview Medical Center. She also said at the time of the fire Jamie was 14 weeks pregnant, and tragically lost the pregnancy. Meanwhile, Baxter said the family is struggling to process the loss of their 1-year-old son and asked for respect for the family’s privacy at this time.
“We’re getting a lot of questions about my nephew, and we haven’t even had time to process that cause we’re still putting everything into our efforts to support Jamie and Jacob,” Baxter said. “Just know they’re at peace, as much as they can be, and they’ll share if they want to when the time is right.”

On Sept. 20, the relative who organized the family’s GoFundme, which as of publication was at $326,233 of its new $400,000 goal, posted a short update. Both have been undergoing various surgeries and physical therapy, as well as dealing with grief.
“This journey for Jake and Jamie is not an easy one. There have been so many positives and we rejoice at all the strides forward. But in reality this is hard,” they stated in the post.
The couple has been together for three years, but Baxter said the support they’ve given each other in the hospital makes it seem like they’ve been together 60. She said “their love story isn’t just of story books, it’s legendary” and that “their love shines throughout everything, their faith is so strong.”
Meanwhile, Jacob Hyland is working to recover as quickly as he can, she said, so he can “get out of here as fast as he can to go back to work and provide” for the family.

Baxter said the family chose to release a photo of the couple’s wrapped hands touching, to give people hope and faith that the couple is fighting to overcome the recent tragedy.
