Kent Police assisted Washington State Patrol with the arrest of a 31-year-old Kent man for investigation of attempting to elude after he reportedly reached a speed of 110 mph along Interstate 5. The driver eventually got his car stuck on the railroad tracks in Kent.
At about 11 p.m. Friday, Aug. 22, Smokey (the State Patrol aircraft) spotted a 2022 Chevy Camaro reportedly traveling 110 mph on northbound I-5 in Fife, according to the State Patrol. The vehicle continued at a high rate of speed into King County. A trooper attempted to stop the vehicle along northbound State Route 167, but the driver continued.
The driver tried several times to hide in parking lots in Kent but kept getting found in his hideouts and driving off again, according to a Monday, Aug. 25 Kent Police social media report. The suspect did not realize that Smokey was following him into and around Kent and giving updates to officers. The pursuit information was aired to Kent Police, and they responded to the area to offer assistance.
While en route to help, the information about the vehicle’s registered owner, a 31-year-old Kent man, was aired. Kent officers recognized him as a suspect who fled from police last month and resisted arrest. On that occasion he was believed to be armed, according to Kent Police.
While trying to flee his most recent hiding spot, the suspect attempted to drive his Camaro over the railroad tracks near West Harrison Street, where there is no crossing, according to Kent Police. He then fled from his stuck Camaro on foot. Smokey spotted him from above in the nearby brush.
Two Kent officers responded, and advised the man he was under arrest, but he made a last-ditch effort to flee and ran into someone’s yard, according to police. He attempted to hide behind a backyard barbecue, and tried to flee on foot again when discovered, but didn’t get too far. He was eventually detained after some additional attempts to resist.
