Valley SWAT helps capture man in Kent with felony warrants

Officers surround Phoenix Court Apartments Feb. 28 to take 39-year-old man into custody

Valley SWAT helped take a man and a woman with felony warrants into custody at the Phoenix Court Apartments in Kent.

Valley SWAT (officers from Kent, Tukwila, Port of Seattle, Renton, Federal Way and Auburn) responded at about 7:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 28 to the apartment complex, 23913 111th Pl. SE., to assist in capturing a 39-year-old man with multiple felony warrants, according to a March 5 Kent Police Facebook post.

The man had a $30,000 warrant for unlawful possession of a firearm, as well as warrants for state Department of Corrections (DOC) escape and second-degree assault with a deadly weapon. The team surveilled the residence, set perimeters to protect the surrounding neighbors, and secured a search warrant to go inside, according to police.

Officers gave several PA announcements, and eventually the man exited the apartment and was taken into custody.

A second warrant suspect, a 39-year-old woman from Renton, was also seen inside the apartment, but when she exited, she attempted to hide, according to police. She was seen crawling in the bushes, refusing commands and looking for a way to escape.

Officers eventually took the woman into custody and booked her on warrants for DOC escape, residential burglary, theft of motor vehicle, domestic violence reckless endangerment and criminal mistreatment.

The incident occurred at the same apartment complex that has had a lot of criminal activity over the last few years.

The city of Kent dropped its public nuisance lawsuit in January against the owner and property management company of the Phoenix Court Apartments after reaching a formal settlement.

The city filed a lawsuit in August 2023 in King County Superior Court against the crime-ridden complex after city staff had urged the owners for nearly a year to take measures to improve the safety of the complex due to criminal and nuisance activity that was negatively impacting other residents of the apartment complex and the surrounding community, according to a city media release.

Following the suit, steps were then taken by the owners and managers to implement security features and they made other positive changes at the property, which have resulted in significantly reduced criminal and nuisance activities, according to the city.
