Covington man suspected of DUI in Renton crash

SR 167 crash Jan. 24 injured his two passengers from Auburn

A Covington man faces vehicular assault and driving under the influence charges following an early morning Jan. 24 crash in Renton that left his Auburn passengers injured.

According to the Washington State Patrol (WSP), at 3:39 a.m. Jan. 24 on State Route 167, just south of 180th Street in Renton, a 20-year-old Covington man struck a ditch, injuring his passengers, a 21-year-old Auburn man and a 19-year-old Auburn man. The Covington man now faces vehicular assault and DUI charges.

According to WSP, the Covington man was traveling northbound on SR 167 in lane one of three when his vehicle left the roadway on the right side and struck a ditch. The Covington man then overcorrected to the left, rolled and came to a rest on its top in lane two. The roadway was blocked for one hour and four minutes.

The Covington man was injured and transported to Valley Medical Center. The passengers were injured and transported to Harborview Medical Center.

According to WSP, the vehicle was a 2015 BMW 328 SD. All passengers were reported as wearing seatbelts. Drugs or alcohol were reported as involved, but the cause is still under investigation.

According to the King County Department of Adult and Juvenile Detention jail lookup portal, the Covington man was booked into the King County Correctional Facility and remains there.
