Man, 56, dies in Renton shooting | Update

Killed Oct. 28 in the 100 block of Logan Avenue South

A 56-year-old man died in Renton on Oct. 28 as a result of a shooting.

According to the King County Medical Examiner’s Office, 56-year-old James Tatum died in Renton on Oct. 28 as a result of multiple gunshot wounds. The medical examiner’s office identified the manner of Tatum’s death as homicide.

Renton police were dispatched to the 100 block of Logan Avenue South at approximately 3:16 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 28 after receiving a call regarding a gunshot wound victim. First responders treated Tatum at the scene for injuries suffered in the shooting. Tatum died at the scene.

Detectives say two 23-year-old Renton residents were depositing money at an ATM at Chase Bank when an 18-year-old Renton man, Tatum’s son, approached them. The son thought the pair had stolen his car keys earlier in the evening.

When the 18-year-old forcibly attempted to locate the keys, his father also approached and entered the altercation, according to Renton Police. The video shows the father moving off screen and then a shot is fired. The 18-year-old flees, and another person, the deceased’s 23-year-old daughter, fires her weapon. Detectives say at least two people fired their guns.

This is a complex investigation with many parts, according to police. Investigators interviewed the involved parties and recovered four guns at the scene, two from each party. They are waiting for ballistics test results to determine who fired the fatal shot.
