Man drowns at Renton park after allegedly evading officers

Officers responded Aug. 30 to a suspicious vehicle at Gene Coulon Beach Park; man jumped in Lake Washington

The Renton Police Department reports that a man died after drowning at Gene Coulon Beach Park while trying to flee officers.

According to the Renton Police, just after noon Saturday, Aug. 30, officers responded to a suspicious vehicle at Gene Coulon Beach Park, 1201 Lake Washington Blvd. N. According to police, two people, a male and a female, left the car and both entered the water to evade the officers.

Officers subsequently pulled the female out of the water and detained her, but the male slipped under the water and drowned, according to police. Renton Police reported the man as 43 years old. As of Wednesday morning, Sept. 3, the King County Medical Examiner’s Office had not yet identified the man.

This incident was considered an in-custody death, and the Valley Independent Investigative Team will take over the investigation.

Kent Police Department is the lead investigating agency. The Renton Reporter contacted Kent Police to inquire about further details, but did not yet receive a response.
