A Renton man was charged with second-degree murder for an incident that occurred at a Seattle hookah lounge on Dec. 1.
On Dec. 31, the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office (KCPAO) charged Abdulrahman Mohmed Hussein, 30, of Renton, with first-degree murder. This charge stems from an alleged Dec. 1 incident at the Evangadi Hookah Lounge, 419 Rainier Ave. S., Seattle, where Abdulrahman Hussein is accused of fatally shooting Khalif Hussein, 34.
According to the King County Medical Examiner’s decedent’s list, Khalif Hussein’s cause of death was a gunshot wound to the torso, and his manner of death was homicide. He’s listed as dying at the hookah lounge on Dec. 1.
According to KCPAO spokesperson Casey McNerthney, Abdulrahman Hussein remains in jail on $3 million bail, the amount requested by King County prosecutors and approved by the court. McNerthney stated that Abdulrahman Hussein’s next court date is his arraignment, where an initial plea is entered, scheduled for Jan. 14.
Details of the case
At about 7:54 a.m. Dec. 1, multiple 911 callers reported a shooting. A witness reported that they observed an individual fire three to four shots at 419 Rainier Ave. S., Seattle. Documents state that the shooter, later identified as Abdulrahman Hussein, was reported to be a Black male wearing a gray hoodie, black pants and a dark blue New York Yankees baseball hat.
When police arrived at the scene, they located Khalif Hussein in a bathroom at the rear of the business. Officers observed that Khalif Hussein had at least one gunshot wound and was bleeding excessively. The victim was transported to Harborview Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead as a result of his injuries. Documents state that Khalif Hussein died as a result of a single gunshot wound that entered through his back and exited his upper chest.
Surveillance video from the location shows Khalif Hussein and Abdulrahman Hussein in a brief physical altercation just outside the entrance to the hookah lounge. The video does not make clear how the altercation began, but the video shows Khalif Hussein striking Abdulrahman Hussein several times while Abdulrahman Hussein is huddled over at the waist. Documents state that once the altercation ended, Khalif Hussein walked back inside the hookah lounge and attempted to close the front gate of the business.
Right after Khalif Hussein walked toward the business, Abdulrahman Hussein straightened up, removed a handgun from his waistband and fired several rounds through the front gate and into the business, documents state. Video from inside the business shows several people running and hiding behind objects for cover as shots are heard.
Documents state that a video shows Abdulrahman Hussein leaving the scene and attempting to ride a Lime scooter. He was linked to the incident because it was found that the operator of the Lime scooter had an email address connected to Abdulrahman Hussein’s department of licensing records, and the video of the shooting suspect and the man on the Lime scooter matched Abdulrahman Hussein. He was additionally identified as the suspect because video showed the suspect throw a sweatshirt in the bushes after running away from the scene of the shooting. A mixed DNA profile from the sweatshirt indicated a possible match for Abdulrahman Hussein.
Abdulrahman Hussein was booked into jail on Dec. 24 for a DUI collision in Renton. When detectives contacted him at the jail and obtained his booking photo, it matched the suspect from the Dec. 1 hookah lounge fatal shooting. Documents state that he has prior felony convictions of first-degree aggravated theft, two counts of first-degree theft and two counts of identity theft.
