Suspect arrested in fatal shooting at Federal Way apartment

Matthew Krutenat arrested Aug. 20 for investigation of killing a 43-year-old man at The Shores Apartments.

The Federal Way Police Department arrested a suspect in the Aug. 18 fatal shooting of a man at The Shores Apartments.

After sending out a request for assistance in locating a suspect, FWPD stated at about 10:30 p.m. Aug. 20 that Matthew Krutenat, a suspect in the Aug. 18 fatal shooting at The Shores Apartments, was arrested for investigation of killing a 43-year-old man.

According to the King County Department of Adult and Juvenile Detention jail lookup portal, Krutenat was booked into the King County Correctional Facility in Seattle at 12:36 a.m. Aug. 21. Federal Way police arrested him for investigation of homicide and unlawful possession of a firearm investigation, according to the portal.

Details of the killing

According to FWPD Deputy Chief Casey Jones, officers responded to a report of a shooting at 7:30 a.m. Aug. 18 at The Shores Apartments, 31821 Third Place SW. Jones said that officers discovered a 43-year-old man who had suffered a gunshot wound to the chest. Officers and fire personnel initiated life-saving efforts, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Initial investigation indicates that the suspect, who fled the scene on foot, was known to the apartment’s occupants,” Jones said. “A K-9 track was initiated, but was unsuccessful in locating the suspect.”

Jones said that officers were still processing the scene, so he did not have any definitive answers on what happened inside the apartment or outside. He said the shooting was not random, and there was no known danger to the public.

This is Federal Way’s eighth homicide of 2025. In 2024, there were five homicides reported in Federal Way.
