Suspected DUI crash in Renton injures three; cars engulfed in flames

Wrong-way driver incident along Interstate 405 on April 14

A fiery three-vehicle collision in Renton on April 14 along Interstate 405 injured three drivers, hospitalizing two.

According to the Washington State Patrol, the collision, at 4:32 a.m. Sunday, April 14, hospitalized a 38-year-old Puyallup man and 68-year-old Bellevue woman, and injured a 40-year-old Leavenworth man.

First responders transported the 38-year-old man and 68-year-old woman to Overlake Medical Center in Bellevue.

According to the State Patrol, the collision resulted from a vehicle driving the wrong way. The incident reportedly involved substance use, with law enforcement arresting the 38-year-old man for investigation of driving under the influence.

According to the State Patrol, the 38-year-old struck the 68-year-old woman’s vehicle head-on as he traveled northbound — and as she traveled southbound — in the southbound lanes of I-405, north of State Route 900 in lane one of three.

According to the State Patrol, the 40-year-old Leavenworth man swerved into the second lane to avoid the collision. The 38-year-old’s vehicle bounced from the impact of the initial collision into the 40-year-old’s vehicle, striking him.

The 38-year-old and 68-year-old’s vehicles arrived at a stop in lane one of three, and the 40-year-old’s vehicle in the third lane and left shoulder. Flames fully engulfed two of the vehicles.

The collision resulted in roadway blockages for approximately 2 hours and 10 minutes, according to the State Patrol.
