In dire need of another win, Kentridge delivered on Friday night at Auburn Memorial Stadium.
Behind a stout defensive performance and a pair of early touchdown runs from junior running back Alex Tyson, the Chargers turned back Auburn Riverside 28-6 in a South Puget Sound League North Division game.
With the win, the Chargers (3-3 in league, 4-4 overall) remain in the hunt for one of the North’s four playoff berths. It was Kentridge’s third win in its last four games.
The loss eliminated Auburn Riverside (2-4, 3-4) from playoff contention.
Tyson got the Chargers on the board early, punching in a 6-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Kicker Wes Concepcion added a 32-yard field goal in the second while Tyson followed with another score, a 7-yard run, pushing the Chargers lead to an insurmountable 17-0.
Tyson finished with 46 yards and the two touchdowns on 11 carries.
Meanwhile, Kentridge’s defense held Auburn Riverside to just 14 yards on the ground on 21 carries, sacked Raven quarterback John Hakala three times and came away with two fumble recoveries. The Kentridge defense allowed just four first downs in the entire game.
Auburn Riverside’s lone score of the game came in the third quarter, when Mike Weiderman returned a kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown.
Kentridge quarterback Brandon Reiter capped off the night for the Chargers with a 1-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. Reiter completed 6-of-17 passing with one interception.
Alex Ferguson led Kentridge rushers with 65 yards on eight carries.
Auburn Riverside finished with 86 yards of total offense, 72 passing and 14 on the ground. Hakala completed 7 of 20 passes with one interception. Defensively, the Ravens were led by Brennen Rodseth with eight solo tackles, including two for a loss.
ELSEWHERE:
• Auburn 42, Decatur 21: Senior running back Jeff Gouveia continued to rack up the scores, collecting five more touchdowns in a nonleague throttling of the Gators. Gouveia rushed for 81 yards on 16 carries as the fifth-ranked Trojans improved to 7-0. Decatur fell to 0-7.
• Kent-Meridian 42, Jefferson 6: Artise Gauldin continued to be one of the SPSL North’s premier running backs, going for 284 yards and five touchdowns on 19 carries, leading the Royals (1-5 in league, 1-6 overall) past winless Jefferson.
While Gauldin keyed the offense, Isaiah Walker continued to key K-M’s defense, collecting three sacks, batting down one pass, collecting four solo tackles and two assisted tackles.
• Auburn Mountainview 37, Sumner 20: Matt Gayman caught a touchdown, ran for another and booted a 26-yard field goal, leading the Lions (4-3, 4-3) past the Spartans (2-3, 3-3).
