Evan Cochran of the King County Jaguars is brought down behind the line of scrimmage during Saturday’s loss to West Sound.

There were some bright spots and some glaring mistakes.

Add the two together and the home opener this past Saturday at French Field for the King County Jaguars didn’t go exactly as planned. The Jaguars, a Kent-based semipro football team, committed 13 offsides penalties and struggled offensively, falling to the West Sound Saints 27-13 in the fourth-annual Cornucopia Bowl.

“We gave them the game,” said Jags coach Mike Astley. “It’s been a long time since I’ve seen that many (offsides penalties) in one game.”

The Jags (0-2) will play host to the Snohomish County Thunder at 6 p.m. on Saturday at French Field.

West Sound set the tone early, bolting out to a 13-0 halftime lead.

The Jaguars finally struck in the third quarter — their first touchdown of the year — on a 17-yard scoring strike from quarterback Micah Prescott to wide receiver Adam Bauer. The touchdown cut the deficit to 13-7, but also was as close as King County would get.

West Sound tacked on two more touchdowns in the third quarter, pushing its lead to 27-6 going into the final quarter.

“We made some improvements, but our negatives still continued,” said Astley. “We finally have some scores on the board … we have a touchdown in the books.”

Mat Kasper delivered the biggest highlight for the Jags in the final moments of the fourth quarter, going 77 yards for a touchdown. Kasper finished with 132 yards rushing on just eight carries.

“He’s a hell of a player,” Astley said. “He definitely made an impression.”
