Former Seattle Thunderbirds star Mathew Barzal continues to excel in his NHL rookie season with the New York Islanders.

Barzal had two goals and three assists for five points in a 7-2 win against the New York Rangers on Saturday at Madison Square Garden. Barzal also had five points (all on assists) in a Nov. 5 win over the Colorado Avalanche.

Barzal is the only NHL player this season with at least two five-point games. He has 44 points through Saturday, the most of any rookie this year. He is considered one of the top contenders for the Calder Trophy, awarded each year to the top rookie in the league.

Barzal, 20, played four seasons with the Kent-based T-Birds and helped lead them to the Western Hockey League championship last season. He was the WHL Playoff MVP after scoring 25 points on seven goals and 18 assists in 16 games. The T-Birds play at the accesso ShoWare Center.

The Islanders picked Barzal in the first round (16th overall) in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft.
